The Quiksilver BIG Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau waiting period begins Friday, December 1st on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii. Over the past 16 years, the event has only run six times due to the requirement that waves reach heights of 20ft Hawaiian. Each year the top big wave surfers on the planet gather at Waimea Bay to paddle out and celebrate the memory of legendary big wave waterman, Eddie Aikau.
Past winners include - Clyde Aikau (Eddie's brother), Keone Downing, Noah Johnson, Ross Clarke-Jones, Kelly Slater and Bruce Irons. All possess extraordinary skills in the ocean. Each has had a "peak day" at Waimea Bay, when paddling power, fitness, wave selection, surfing equipment, confidence and courage have all come together.
The event kicks off on November 30th with the traditional opening ceremony, and then the wait for giant low pressure systems begins. Stay tuned for the live webcast if it goes...The Bay calls the day!
