NORCAL WOMEN'S SURF CLUB HOSTS 3rd ANNUAL SURF FEST
Popular All-Day Beach Event to Benefit the Bay Area Surfing Community

SAN FRANCISCO (August 30, 2005) - Girls and women, ages 6 to 60, will take to the water at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica on Saturday, September 10th for the third annual NorCal Women's Surf Fest. The day-long 'surf celebration' benefits local chapters of the Surfrider Foundation, SurfAid International and the restoration of Pacifica State Beach. The event will include a wide variety of activities for surfers and spectators.

Surf Fest will offer something for everyone, from beginners' clinics and novice events, to a contest with women's short board, long board and body board divisions featuring some of the best female surfers on the West Coast. Men are welcome to enter the "SF Style Session" . a Bay-to-Breakers-meets-surf-contest event - where they must surf in drag. "SF Style Session" contestants will be judged for their surfing prowess and costume "fabulousness."

"Last year's Surf Fest sold out with over 200 participants surfing and more than 300 more watching the fun," said Anne Moellering, NorCal Women's Surf Club co-founder. "We expect even more people this year to enjoy new contest divisions, massage, surf lessons and, of course, the men surfing fabulously in drag!"

The popularity of women's surfing in Northern California mirrors that of national and global trends. Today, it's one of the fastest growing female sports on the planet. In fact, women now make up 37% of all surfers, up from 25% in 2002 and 19% in 2001 (source: Board-Trac).

On land, Surf Fest will include free pilates and yoga, massage, surf board demos and raffle prizes (with grand prize give-aways of surfboards and airline tickets to Mexico). Surf lessons will be taught by NCWSC partner Girls Adventure Out. Surf Fest entry forms and details can be found at www.ncwsc.com.

Sponsors of the NorCal Women's Surf Fest include Alaska Airlines, NorCal, Wise, Aqua and SF Surf Shops, Patagonia and the Body Shop, among many others.

The NCWSC is a grassroots organization joining the growing ranks of female surfers worldwide. "We founded this club in 2001 to celebrate women's surfing and give back to our surf community," said Judith Cohen, co-founder, NCWSC. "We now have over 650 female surfers from Bolinas up North to Santa Cruz in the South, tripling our membership over the past two years. And the more we grow, the more we can give back!"

Proceeds from the event will benefit three organizations in the surfing community: local chapters of the Surfrider Foundation, SurfAid International and Pacifica State Beach.
