RIP CURL PRO BELLS POSTPONED, SPC WOMENS ON STANDBY

Thursday, March 24th, 2005 - THE Rip Curl Pro has again been postponed today, but the SPC Fruit Pro is on standby for a 12 noon decision on round one competition. Though winds remain strong onshore, a new swell direction is producing some lines at Bells this morning. Organisers are hoping the swell will build as forecast, allowing the girls to hit the juice around lunchtime. Dependant on conditions, there is a possibility we may get underway at Rincon or Winkipop.

Claire Bevilaqua
Australian Claire Bevilaqua, a new WCT recruit, has her morning fix as the sun rises over chilly Bells Beach.
With the Rip Curl Pro always conducted over Easter as the second event on the Foster's Men's World Tour, we are currently suffering from the fact that this coming Sunday is the earliest Easter in event memory.

"I think the swell is lacking at the moment because we're still in the summer swell patterns," commented Top 45 surfer and former Bells local Troy Brooks. "We've seen southerlies the last few days and that's more January sort of weather, whereas we normally hold the Rip Curl Pro over Easter in more westerly patterns where you see all the good swells."

"It's been a slow week with the boys trying their hands at the new Torquay Sands golf course, but Hog (Nathan Hedge ) has towed his boat all the way down from Sydney, so we're going fishing this afternoon," added Brooks, who has been busy shaking hands after his six star victory in Western Australia last week.

Surf Day Out
Over 12 schools from the surrounding area headed down to Bells Beach for a Surf Day Out.
"There's a little swell forecast to be building later today and tomorrow, but regrettably, there's definitely no classic 6-8' classic Bells conditions forecast over the next week . but that doesn't mean it can't happen," seconded event director and former world champion Damien Hardman.

The next call for the Rip Curl Pro will be at 7am tomorrow (Friday). Enthusiasts can get on-line today at www.ripcurl.com to keep up with the status on the SPC Fruit Pro and the latest developments down here at Bells.

The Rip Curl Pro is Australia's longest running professional surfing event and holds a proud place in surfing folklore, stretching back to 1973. The Rip Curl Pro's status as one of six Victorian Government-designated Hallmark International Sporting Events each year, alongside the Melbourne Formula One and Phillip Island Motorcycle Grand Prix, the Australian Tennis Open, the Melbourne Cup and the AFL Grand Final, is an acknowledgment of its contribution to the state's rich sporting culture.

Bomb
Hawaiian Rochelle Ballard gears up for a practice surf at Bells Beach. Ballard will face Keala Kennelly (Haw) and Serena Brooke (Aus) in her round 1 heat.
The Rip Curl Pro is proudly presented by Deakin University, associated with Surfing Victoria, the Surf Coast Shire Council, the Victorian Government Department of Tourism, Sport & The Commonwealth Games, the Association of Surfing Professionals, Foster's, and supported by sponsors Telstra, Chupa Chups, National Australia Bank, Falls Creek, Schweppes, Four'n Twenty Pies and Tracks.
