THE SHOW ROLLS ON AT SNAPPER

Snapper
A view from the rocks at Snapper looking towards the 2005 Quiksilver and Roxy Pro towers.
Friday March 3rd, 2005 - THE swell has dropped a little on Australia's Gold Coast, but remains clean and rippable, so we're back into the schedule of the Quiksilver Pro Presented By Boost Mobile at Snapper Rocks this morning. We're starting round two at 8am, while the women's Roxy Pro Presented by Boost is off the day.

We almost had our own weather pattern under the clear and sunny skies this morning about 7.15 when the RACQ Careflight Helicopter hovered over the beach for some five minutes winching down a television celebrity for a segment of the Today show. The full duration of the top-rating breakfast show is being broadcast live nationwide from the beach on Australia's National Nine network this morning.

As sand flew everywhere, and the radical downdraft produced gnarly 'downshore' winds, photographers had to clear the beach in a hurry and take a break from shooting the world's best surfers warming up out in the lineup. That's showbiz!

Our 'biz' will start at 8am this morning, with last year's Foster's Most Improved Surfer, Nathan Hedge who finished seventh in the world, out there to take on Quiksilver wildcard Dane Reynolds (USA). Fellow wildcard Luke Munro (AUS) is matched against Brazil's Peterson Rosa two heats later.

Tom Whitaker
Australian Tom Whitaker was relegated to round two by 2001 ASP WCT world champion CJ Hobgood (USA). Whitaker will face compatriot Toby Martin in the "sudden death" round.
"It's running nicely along the bank, clean and a consistent 2-3 foot" reported Hedge after his early morning tune-up surf this morning.

After being inducted into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame last night, Mark Occhilupo confronts Brazil's back-again warrior Renan Rocha in heat five, while defending event champion Mick Lowe (AUS) is drawn against Cronulla rookie Kirk Flintoff (AUS) immediately thereafter.

Other heats that catch the eye include three which pitch new rookies against seasoned competitors, with Cory Lopez against South Africa's Travis Logie, Kalani Robb against Chris Ward, and Daniel Wills against Tim Reyes. Both Cory and Kalani will be out to improve on their performances yesterday. California's Chris Ward looks particularly hungry and capable.

Organisers will be looking to complete round two of the event today. With yesterday's totally unexpected swell that seemed to come out of nowhere, still pulsing today, everyone is taking the wind and waves as they come.

Today Show
Tracey Grimshaw and Karl Stefanovic, hosts of Channel Nine's Today Show, shooting two hours live National TV on location at Snapper Rocks for day four of the Quiksilver Pro.
"Today looks good.let's roll until it's no good!" laughed Head Judge Perry Hatchett as he climbed back into the judges tower with his crew this morning.

The Quiksilver Pro Presented by Boost Mobile, and the Roxy Pro Presented by Boost Mobile, are both made possible by the support of the Gold Coast City Council. Both tournaments will feature the specialty awards made possible by co-sponsor Evian. The Evian Longest Tube Ride is worth $5000 for the winning male and female surfer to slot into the longest Gold Coast barrel of the tournament. Timekeepers will be keeping their eyes on their stopwatches.
