Saturday, September 25, 2004 (Seignosse, France) The Quiksilver Pro in France commenced today, with three heats of round one completed. The US$260,000 World Championship Tournament (WCT) was then placed on hold due to deteriorating conditions, before ultimately being postponed for the day.
Clean 3-4ft (1.3m) waves were on offer at 'La Guardian' this morning, prior to the higher tide filling in.
West Australian Taj Burrow won the opening heat of the Quiksilver Pro, ahead of Tim Curran (CA, USA) and fellow countryman Toby Martin. The current ratings #12 has suffered the flu this past week, but was happy to report feeling better and excited about the European leg of tour. Following a couple of quick tube rides, he advanced directly to round three.

|
Phil MacDonald (Aus) finding some tube time during round one of the Quiksilver Pro, France. MacDonald advanced to round 3, forcing countrymen Luke Egan and Beau Emerton to round 2.
|
"It was nice and clean out there, but a bit tricky since the swell is kind of weak," explained Burrow. "I was lucky enough to get a coupe of barrels which pulled me through, as I saw Timmy do some good turns. I'm just getting over the flu I had during Trestles (last WCT in California), so I'm excited for both of the European events."
Bruce Irons (Kauai, HAW) equaled his best result of the season by defeating 1999 world champ Mark Occhilupo (Gold Coast) and fellow Australian Darren O'Rafferty (Port Macquarie). The Kauaian has suffered poor results all year, and is in jeopardy of losing his spot on the WCT for 2005, but thanks to a strong opening wave and a 5.37 score at the end, the current ratings #41 skipped the dreaded 'losers' 33rd place round.
"I'm stoked to finally win my first heat," said Irons. "Thankfully my first wave was pretty good, cause I didn't get anything else until the end. So glad that last one came in. It's been a weird year, so I'm just taking whatever I can get now. My brother's had a really good year and has been giving bits of advice, so hopefully things turn around for me here in Europe."
